The World needs to accelerate the energy transition towards sustainability (through a transformation of energy systems), either to handle climate either to become as soon as possible independent from fossil fuels. Not an easy task (war, demand profile, geostrategy, etc), currently struggling still with a high usage of fossil materials to produce energy (coal production is set to rise to its highest ever levels in 2022 source: international centre for sustainable carbon).
The EU and European countries today have a clear common objective for a fully carbon-neutral economy, by 2050 at the latest.
In a fully carbon-neutral economy, electricity will be the main and most efficient energy carrier, and it will need to be coupled with other energy sectors.
In accordance with ENTSO – European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, electricity will become the dominant energy carrier, being the most the most versatile and efficient energy carrier, which will need to be coupled with other energy sectors.
SME.s play a major role in this effort. Regardless limited time and resources, a quick scan assessment to internal governance and procedures, energy usage and management, waste and environmental impacts, etc, is highly recommended, towards sustainability.
