INSTALLATION OF OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES – BOTTOM FIXED
Jun 01st 2023
The majority of offshore wind farms are located on the continental shelf, about 10 km off the coast in shallow waters.
It is not foreseen for the upcoming Portuguese Wind Farms, OWT bottom fixed. It is most likely to have floating or semi submersible OWT. Similar generic problems (example anchorage vs foundations), but as well different approaches and issues (conversion stations).
The lifecycle of an Offshore Windfarm (OWF), on the view of operators, consists typically on the following representative stages (different types of wind farm, may consider adjustments), as follow:
selection and preparation of a formal consent application,
manufacturing and production of turbines, moorings, and cables,
installation of multiple components of OWTs including cables, foundations, tower, nacelle, and blades (essentially marine operations),
online condition monitoring,
decommissioning.
Marine operations play a pivotal role throughout all phases of a wind farm’s life cycle. The installation phase.
TIME for DECISION and ACTION
May 29th, 2023
Short memory often elapsing periods of time of our lives, and the usage of lessons learned from past mistakes, cannot prevail against wise and rational governance decisions, running the risk of systematic errors.
Understanding the present opportunity, bridging the past and the future, becomes critical for: innovative and sustainable decisions to be made timely. Sometimes the usage of a microscope is the adequate tool to analyse data, others a telescope, but on both cases, focus on relevant data, is critical for the decision making process, towards a clear vision.
METEOCEAN and Maritime Space Planning – Offshore Wind
May 17th, 2023
Meteoocean factors such as: wind speed and pattern, snow, ice, ambient temperature, lightning, water depth, seabed conditions and soil characteristics, sea state, visibility, etc. on a wide range of utilization, namely seasonality, should be considered. This factors, and regardless their analysis and prediction difficulty, shall take precedence to any other, as they cannot be changed by the project, on the opposite shall guide it.
Failure to proceed with a detailed pre-assessment, will eventually lead to highly expensive and inefficient projects either economically (Capex, Opex, LCOE) either supporting the objective to achieve renewables energy targets.
