DECARBONIZATION SHIPPING – PROPULSION SYSTEMS
July 14th , 2023
Zero emission are today’s an ongoing process where besides adjustments on business, operations and mainly technological changes, experience is being gained.
On the specific case of engines and propulsion systems, many changes and projects are being implemented from traditional diesel generated propulsion to, fully electric system, hybrid solutions, dual-fuel powered (hydrogen – diesel) gas-fuelled engines (LNG), and others, all optimised for energy power transfer to thrust as efficiently as possible, ensuring endurance maximising operations, producing no particulates and emitting significantly less NOx, or even 0 emissions.
FLOATING WIND FARMS – SUBSTATIONS: THE NEXT CHALLENGE
Jul 12th 2023
Now that the first commercial floating windfarms are about to enter the development phase, along with governmental zoning Offshore Wind Farms in Maritime Spatial Plans – MSP.s, and ‘call for tenders’ are in force, proper attention needs to be taken to a critical element: ELECTRICAL INTERCONNECTION.
The great majority of offshore wind farms are located on the continental shelf, about 10 km off the coast in shallow waters, using monopile or jacket foundation for the OWT. As well, substations platforms are installed on a monopile or jacket foundation.
Although expanding far from the coast, or simply due to local characteristics mean, greater depth requiring the usage of floating or semi-submersible wind turbines, will as well require new developments for substations: floating substations, or bottom installed.
Although essential for the successful development of commercial scale floating offshore wind farms, floating substations have not received the same degree of attention or full-scale prototypes as their wind turbines counterparts.
OFFSHORE WIND INDUSTRY – STRATEGIC GOVERNANCE and SUPPLY CHAIN
June 09th 2023
In the worldwide terms (already referred on another post) a “big vacuum” of the large vessels required to install offshore turbines is approaching. As well, bottlenecks for key components (where geopolitics play a major role). Information, product and financial flows are intrinsically connected on a supply chain.
Locally, besides the major importance for sustainable economical development, under a Supply Chain Management effort, the following aspects are of the most importance:
R&D_training_knowledge_engineering;
Infrastructures, equipment, stakeholders;
Manufacturing capacity (raw materials, manufacturing, assembly, testing);
Logistics In-On-Out (either for installation, operations and decommissioning);
O&M (control and monitoring, maintenance at all levels);
Grid adaptability (conversion, transformation, transmission, distribution);
Interface with other renewables and non renewables (phase out) energies.
