IEA – ENERGY TECHNOLOGY PERSPECTIVES 2023
IEA – Energy Technologies Perspectives
January 2023
Energy Technology Perspectives 2023 (windows.net)
A new global energy economy emerging influencing household, industry, mobility and generation, taking is own place on the new industrial age (Industry 5.0) – the age of clean energy technology manufacturing, blending the power of smart, precise, and accurate technology, with human creativity and ingenuity.
Renewables are getting increasing significance and reliability, with the rapid growth of solar, wind, electric power storage and hydrogen, to mention some, overwhelming fossil fuels although consistently not immediately. Despite the rapid recent growth in clean energy technologies and demand for metals critical to them, the world still relies primarily on coal, oil and gas to meet its energy needs. (quote) The story of the new energy economy is still being written (unquote).
Exogen factors basis of current global energy crisis are inducing clean energy transitions worldwide, driving intensive investments, in particular for the usage and exploitation of new materials.
There is no unique route for clean energy, towards net zero, and each country, needs to assess and identify what best fit his own needs, either on energy sources either on technologies and associated supply chains. Ultimately how it can benefit from the opportunities of the new energy economy.
Although the risks and challenges posed by scarcity and concentration of raw materials, the international trade operandum mode, recommend diversification and cooperation, which is not an easy challenge. It is not realistic for most countries to compete effectively across all parts of the relevant clean energy technology supply chains. Potentiate own competitive advantages complemented by strategic partnerships, is a strong recommendation.
Infrastructure are long lead investments, becoming more and more international requiring extensive planning and environmental regulations (example life cycle), and security measures.
Industrial strategies for clean energy technology manufacturing require an all-of-government approach, closely coordinating climate and energy security imperatives with economic opportunities.

Industry technologies are changing manufacturing [Industry 1.0 – 5.0]
New technologies are revolutionizing the way companies manufacture, improve and distribute their products.
Those include, among others, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and analytics, Artificial Intelligence(AI), leading to the concept of smart factory. Data collection, analysis and assessment, will allow a better decision making process. Digital technologies lead to increased automation, and machine learning into their production facilities and throughout their operations, predictive maintenance, self-optimization of process improvements.
New level of efficiencies and responsiveness to customers services, and above all, capability for improvements on the environment, social and economic aspects.
Change is a challenge, and new technologies are disruptive, raising complexity (many variables with un-known or unknowable consequences), uncertainty (inability to assess risk versus benefit assessments), ambiguity (involving conflicts over ethics, and relationship with human).
Our future is a race between the growing power of our technology and the wisdom with which we use it. Let’s make sure wisdom wins (Stephan Hawking, 2018)
Briefly in one and a half century, we’ve been through the so called industrial revolutions. From late 18th century with the 1st Industrial Revolution to our days It is fairly accepted that we are now the Industry 4.0, in the edge of Industry 5.0.
